An LED message board — also called an electronic message centre — is a programmable display that shows text, graphics, or animation and can be updated remotely. For businesses with changing offers, pricing, or event schedules, it replaces the recurring cost and labour of changeable copy with software.
The specification that matters most is pixel pitch: the distance in millimetres between adjacent LEDs. Tighter pitch means higher resolution and a higher price, but it only pays off at close viewing distances. A display read from a highway at 200 feet does not need the pitch of one read from a sidewalk, and over-specifying pitch is the most common way to overspend on these.
Brightness and controls matter almost as much. Outdoor displays need enough nits to hold up in direct Texas sun, paired with automatic dimming so they are not glaring at night — many ordinances require that dimming explicitly. What to Consider
- Ordinances often regulate content behaviour
- Many jurisdictions limit how often a message may change, prohibit animation or scrolling, and mandate automatic dimming. These rules shape what the display can do, so they need checking before purchase, not after.
- Who updates it
- The value of a message centre is entirely in how often content changes. Decide who owns that task before installation — displays without an owner tend to freeze on one message within a few months.
- Service access
- Front-serviceable cabinets can be maintained from a ladder or lift; rear-service units need clearance behind the sign. On a tall pylon this difference materially affects future maintenance cost.
