Wayfinding is a system rather than a sign. It is the coordinated set of directional, identification, and regulatory signage that lets a visitor move through a site without asking anyone for help — and it succeeds or fails as a whole, not sign by sign.
Good systems are built on a decision-point map. Every place where a person must choose a direction gets a sign, and every sign carries only the destinations relevant at that point. The most common failure is the opposite: listing everything everywhere, which produces cluttered panels people stop reading. Consistent typography, colour coding, and terminology matter more than any individual panel design, because visitors learn the system as they move through it.
On campuses and in healthcare settings, parts of the system carry legal requirements — ADA-compliant tactile lettering and Braille at permanent room identifications, with specified mounting heights and contrast. We build those to standard alongside the directional signage. Every unit is designed, fabricated, and installed by Flite Signs from our Houston facility, with permit-ready drawings prepared before fabrication begins and a five-year warranty on completed work.

What to Consider
- Map decisions before designing signs
- Walk and drive the route as a first-time visitor would. Every point where you hesitate is a sign location; anywhere else is usually clutter.
- Plan for names changing
- Departments move and tenants turn over. Modular inserts cost slightly more initially and save replacing entire panels later.
- Use one vocabulary throughout
- If the front entrance is called Main Entrance on one sign and Building A on another, the system has already failed. Terminology should be fixed before fabrication.
