Pylon signs are tall freestanding structures on one or more poles, built to be seen from a distance and at speed. Where a monument identifies an entrance, a pylon captures traffic that has not yet decided to turn — which is why they cluster along highways, feeder roads, and major commercial corridors.
Most are multi-tenant. A primary cabinet carries the anchor tenant or centre name, with a stack of interchangeable tenant panels below. Panels are usually routed aluminum with push-through acrylic or flat polycarbonate faces, sized so a single tenant can be swapped without disturbing the rest of the sign or taking the structure down.
Structurally these are the most demanding signs we build. Pole size, foundation depth, and steel specification are all driven by overall height and the wind load for the site, so every pylon is engineered and sealed before permitting. Installation involves crane work and, for illuminated units, a dedicated electrical service. Every unit is designed, fabricated, and installed by Flite Signs from our Houston facility, with permit-ready drawings prepared before fabrication begins and a five-year warranty on completed work.

What to Consider
- Height is the whole point, and the main constraint
- Allowable height is usually the single most restrictive part of the ordinance and often the item that determines whether a pylon is viable at all. It is the first thing we check.
- Plan tenant panels for turnover
- Panel sizes should be standardised at design time. Centres that mix panel dimensions end up refabricating the surrounding structure every time a tenant changes.
- Overhead clearance and utilities
- Crane access and overhead power lines govern where a pylon can physically be set, independently of where the ordinance allows it.
