Channel letters are individually fabricated three-dimensional letters mounted directly to a building face or raceway. Each letter is formed from aluminum coil for the returns and backs, with an acrylic face retained by a trim cap, which is what gives the letter its depth and its crisp edge from the street.
Illumination is the main decision. Face-lit letters push light forward through a coloured acrylic face and read hardest at night from a distance. Reverse-lit letters, often called halo-lit, use an opaque face and throw light backward onto the wall, producing a softer silhouette that suits masonry and architectural facades. Combination lighting does both. All three use LED modules rather than neon, drawing far less power and lasting substantially longer.
Mounting method matters as much as the letters. Flush-mounted letters sit tight to the wall and require individual penetrations and wiring behind each letter. Raceway-mounted letters share a single enclosure that carries the power supplies and mounts as one unit, which most landlords prefer because it means one set of wall penetrations. Every unit is designed, fabricated, and installed by Flite Signs from our Houston facility, with permit-ready drawings prepared before fabrication begins and a five-year warranty on completed work.
Key Features
- Formed aluminum returns and backs with acrylic faces
- Face-lit, reverse-lit (halo), or combination LED illumination
- Flush, raceway, or standoff mounting
- Custom colour matching to brand standards
- Wired to UL standards and the National Electric Code
- Non-illuminated fabricated letters also available
What to Consider
- Letter height drives readability
- A rough working rule is 10 feet of legible viewing distance per inch of letter height. A 12-inch letter reads at roughly 120 feet; a sign meant to be read from a six-lane road needs considerably more height than one above a storefront door.
- Landlord criteria come before city permits
- Multi-tenant properties almost always publish sign criteria governing letter height, illumination type, and mounting. We review those alongside the local sign ordinance before drawing anything, because criteria are usually the stricter of the two.
- Power and access
- Illuminated letters need a dedicated circuit and a switch or timer. Where none exists, an electrician has to run one, which is often the longest lead item on an otherwise straightforward install.
